What is an "hermetic" connector? How to select one?
When a connector must pass through an equipment panel and a pressure differential exists between the two sides of the panel (e.g., airborne pressurized compartments, vacuum equipment), an hermetic connector (such as the D38999/21 series) must be used.
Key difference: standard connectors rely on rubber gaskets for sealing and cannot withstand a sustained pressure differential; hermetic connectors use a glass-to-metal seal process and can maintain a stable pressure differential between the interior and exterior of the compartment over the long term, preventing gas or liquid leakage.
Note: hermetic connectors typically support solder cup termination only, not crimping. Special attention must be paid to process compatibility during selection and harness assembly.
